ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I’m very pleased to announce the publication of my book:

To Change the Impossible World: Central American Women

In Struggle and Resistance

This book sheds light on the often overlooked bravery of women during times of conflict and war, particularly in the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. It explores how their critical roles have reshaped the narrative of how women survive and thrive in adverse circumstances. The book aims to provide historical context of women’s experiences during the armed conflict era and post-conflict reconstruction process, as well as current issues affecting women. The book covers the historical periods of armed conflicts from the 1960s to 1990s in Central American countries and beyond, which had a significant impact on U.S. history and continue to play a role in related economic, migration, and foreign policies.

Acknowledgements

The individuals I am most grateful for are those I met during my field visits to Central American countries. Though I may vaguely remember their faces and names, their wisdom and experiences have left an indelible mark on my entire being. Through conversations ranging from simple to complicated, I learned so much from these individuals, many of whom I developed friendships with.

However, I must also mention my students at the University of Houston, who were the ones to initially open my eyes to the world of Central America, particularly Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. It was through understanding their struggles that I realized my own ignorance about their histories. This realization occurred two decades ago, and since then, I have embarked on a journey of discovery, exploration, and scholarship. This book is a result of that journey.

To my son, my daughter, and my sister Annie, you are the reason for the fruits of my journey, and you will forever hold a special place in my heart.
